Paul had a glorious time of harvest in Thessalonica, for the Thessalonians responded in a way, he hadn’t yet seen, to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Their conversion was exemplary, for they saw the gospel written in the lives of Paul, Silvanus and Timothy, and when they “made a decision” for Christ, they knew that it entailed persecution, and suffering for the sake of Christ Jesus. Thus having counted the cost, they paid the price with some suffering martyrdom for the faith. How they stood firm in the Lord is what we need to learn. They had the best of teachers: the Holy Spirit of God and the Apostle Paul with his co-labourers, Silvanus and Timothy. How were they taught and discipled in the faith? What are essentials of the faith that we must always have? How can we have the same fruit today, to the glory of God?
Shouldn’t we be able to do “more” for the Lord, since our advantage is greater, for we have the entire Bible plus many resources at our disposal because of the Internet? We also have many centuries of Christian history and the godly counsel from the many godly believers. Why then haven’t we been able to produce disciples like the Thessalonians? What is lacking in today’s church? Despite the many who claim to be Christians, holiness is not a major characteristic in many. We need to go back again to the basics and re-learn conversion, discipleship and follow-up so that once again, we can have believers who so love the Lord that the report of their faith was sounded abroad to all the believers in every place. That’s what this study is about.
When you see a young believer suffering for the faith, what do you do? How will you respond? 1 Thessalonians is a manual for true discipleship. And as we go through this course, we will discover principles which we need to use to follow up young believers in the faith, rather than using “programmes” that man proposes. “Go … and make disciples …” (Mt 28:19). That is our Lord’s command and 1 Thessalonians will teach us how to achieve that.

Paul was the Apostle to the Gentiles and as such, was given great grace by God to do things which will become normative for believers in Christ. We will study how churches were birthed so that we can follow in Paul’s footsteps and learn how to plant churches as well.

Truly the Thessalonian church has an example worth emulating. They knew little but they loved much and their newfound joy in the Lord Jesus proved so contagious that their faith in God was sounded forth “in every place”! How we need to emulate them!

How was the Gospel Delivered? Have you ever wondered why there are not many exemplary conversions? Is there a connection between the Gospel preacher and the Gospel hearer? How and in what ways? How then are we to proclaim God’s gospel, God’s way?

Once a Person receives Christ, their problems are not ended; in fact, they’ve only just begun! How then are we to continue our work of discipleship so that the new believer can stand firm even when tested so severely like the Thessalonians were? Thank God, all the answers are in His Word, the precious gift our Lord gave to us (see John 17:14a).

Paul continues to teach the Thessalonians, for he knows their major need is to be holy as God is holy and to achieve that aim, he must teach them about God’s demands on their lives and provide guidance for the specific areas of their lives that they are weak. How we need this same message to be preached strongly and clearly in our pulpits today so that God’s people will know how to live pure and holy lives.

The Fear of Death is natural for most people. For believers, it can be dismissed through knowing what God says about it.

The Coming of the Lord is so much nearer for us than for the believers in Thessalonica. Future Salvation (which is Glorification) is nearer to us than when we first believed.

In the light of our Lord’s Return, Paul exhorts those who love our Lord Jesus to sobriety and alertness so that we are not caught unawares as unbelievers will be, for we are not destined for wrath but “for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ”.

PAUL RATTLES OFF A LONG SERIES OF INSTRUCTIONS as if he knew that the Thessalonian believers would have no problem receiving them and obeying them. Would that we have such believers today, whose hearts are so willing to obey the Lord that all that’s lacking is to know exactly what God demands of them!
